Why the Diogo Jota signing makes so much sense for Liverpool

Diogo Jota 'couldn't say no' as Liverpool confirm new signing - Football365

Diogo Jota. A Portuguese international, a versatile piece for any offense. His primary position is on the left wing but can also play as a striker or shadow striker. Liverpool spent around 41 million euros on him which could rise to 45 million. In the 2019/20 season, Jota played at Wolverhampton. So let's talk about his season

2019/20: Diogo Jota played in 48 games in all competitions, 42 if you do not include Europa League qualifying. I will also exclude Europa League because that is not a competition Liverpool will be playing in next year. So that leaves us with the Premier League. In the Premier League, he played in 34 out of the 38 games. In those 34 appearances, he played 2,298 minutes. During these games, he recorded 7 goals and 1 assist. He is also most dangerous as a left winger as 7 goals and 1 assist came from him playing on the left wing.

So after you look at his resume for the last season you may think it is not very impressive. That may have a little truth to it but, the real reason I think it is a great move is because of the man he may be replacing. Roberto Firmino. The center forward is in one of the world's best attacks currently. Firmino who is Brazilian does not score all the goals, because his two other strike partners are Sadio Mane and Mo Salah. Mane and Salah score most of the goals whereas Firmino provides them, as he had 13 assists in all competitions. Firmino is a better playmaker and scorer than Jota currently, but that is to be expected of the 28-year-old striker. What I see Jota's role at Liverpool to be is that he will learn from Firmino over the season a lot. They both speak Portuguese, which is big as Jota can even learn his native language. I think Liverpool is looking at Jota somewhat as a Firmino replacement because of his versatility. It is really all up to Firmino to work with him and mentor him, and then we can see how great Jota can become.
